Hey, have you ever heard of cyberpunk 2077? It’s kind of a big deal in the gaming world. Games like Deus Ex (2000), its remake Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011), Shadowrun: Dragonfall (2014), System Shock 2 (1999), and even the legendary Final Fantasy VII (1997) have all contributed to the cyberpunk gaming genre.
When you look at these examples, it becomes a bit easier to understand what cyberpunk style is all about. It often presents the darkest aspects of the modern world and pushes them to the extreme in a futuristic setting. For instance, in Final Fantasy VII, it imagines a future where technology allows companies to literally suck the life out of the planet for energy, and the player takes on the role of Cloud, a mercenary trying to stop it.
Similarly, in Deus Ex, the player becomes an agent for UNATCO, a global police force that later discovers it’s part of a conspiracy to control the world. These cyberpunk stories often highlight the most sinister possibilities of technology being used against people in a future where corporations have immense power, even rivaling governments.
These kinds of stories reflect contemporary concerns, like the looming threat of environmental disasters or the fear of global dominance, and present them in a future where those dangers are magnified.
While it’s unlikely that modern governments will crumble as dramatically as they do in these games (fingers crossed), it’s interesting to see how the game settings critique corporate power.
